Its history is tied up in the oil rigs that continue to dot the landscape, but Ardmore, OK offers much more than the search for oil. Book today with Choice Hotels and explore the city’s many attractions nearby, including:
A good place to start your exploration of the area is at the Greater Southwest Historical Museum, where you will find exhibits housed in three separate historical wings built in 1935-36 by the WPA. Exhibits are eclectic and touch on every aspect of the area’s history. Most impressive perhaps is the Wichita Falls Spudder Rig, an oil rig used in the Ardmore oil fields between 1920 and 1945. In the hall you will find recreations of Ardmore through the years: an original log cabin, a general store, a drug store, a medical and dental office, as well as the town barbershop, law office, courtroom, post office, school and blacksmith shop.
Take an evening to relax at the Gusher Lounge where you can enjoy karaoke on Wednesdays, open-mic night on Thursdays, live music entertainment on weekends and a nice place to relax with a drink any night of the week.
Another WPA project is Lake Murray State Park, the oldest and largest in Oklahoma, comprising 12,400 acres and featuring a beautiful 5,700-acre lake. There is a lot to do here, so prepare to spend at least one day playing golf or tennis, swimming, playing water sports, going horseback riding, enjoying a special ATV area and hiking.
The Eliza Cruce Hall Doll Museum is not just for girls: hidden inside the Ardmore Public Library, it features more than 300 rare and antique dolls from the United States and Europe representing a wide range of historical periods. The collection began in 1936 when Eliza Hall (niece of the state's then-governor, Lee Cruce) purchased a doll on a trip to Europe; it expanded from there, and now you will see porcelain, bisque, leather, wood and wax dolls on display, including carved wood French dolls once owned by the French queen Marie Antoinette.
No matter when you are visiting, there is bound to be something happening at the Goddard Center for the Visual and Performing Arts. The center is a cultural complex offering venues in theatre, dance, music and visual arts. You do not want to miss the art galleries (and admission is free) that feature a permanent collection of Western and contemporary paintings, with other exhibits on a more temporary basis. Check the performing arts schedule to see what shows, ballets, or plays might be taking place during your stay.
After absorbing all that culture, your kids might be ready for something more physical, and they will find it at the Ardmore Community Water Park. Once an old pool, it has been reclaimed and rebuilt to become an exciting water park with twisting slides, water basketball and a zero-depth entry pool for young children.
Stay with Choice Hotels and get the rest and relaxation you need as you enjoy museums, water slides, a day spent fishing or hiking, a journey into the past through a museum visit…or just taking some time to do nothing. Whatever your plans for your vacation, there will surely be something to pique your interest in Ardmore, OK.
