The city of Buford was named after Colonel A.S. Buford, who was the president of the Atlanta Richmond At-Line Railway. The railroad played a big part in Buford’s history. To learn more about the area’s heritage, take a trip to the Buford Museum. It’s located at the Buford Community Center, Town Park and Theatre. If you’re lucky, you may also be in town when the center offers a free outdoor movie or concert!
To soak up more history, go on a walking tour to see a variety of historic homes in Victorian, Colonial Revival, Mission and other architectural styles. Many of the families that built these homes were closely tied to the leather industry, which was Buford’s leading industry during the 1800s and early 1900s. Nicknamed the “Leather City,” Buford was a large producer of leather products, including saddles, horse collars and shoes. The Tannery Row area which once housed the factories that created these products is now home to many of the city’s painters, glass blowers, jewelers and other artists. Take a trip to the Tannery Row Artist’s Colony to meet the artists and see how they work.
