September 12, 2011 – Silver Spring, MD
In honor of the 10th anniversary of September 11 and National Day of Service and Remembrance, Choice Hotels International held the annual Silver Spring corporate headquarters Room to Rebuild project on September 12. The project included 75 Choice Hotels International corporate volunteers that helped to revitalize Shepherd’s Table and Community Vision, neighboring non-profit facilities. The entire area is referred to as “Progress Place”. These two organizations are linked together sharing a dining room and many of the same clients.
Shepherd’s Table’s mission of providing basic services to those in need began almost 27 years ago. At the core of these basic services is the dinner meal offered seven nights a week from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. In all of these years, they have never missed an evening of service. Since 1983, Shepherd’s Table has provided basic services and has served over 1,076,000 meals to those in need. In addition to serving meals, they provide haircuts, bus tokens to/from shelters, clothing, references for other services, and they have an eye clinic.
Community Vision, run by Interfaith Works, provides daily services critical to the safety and well being of homeless men and women in Montgomery County. Community Vision is designed to provide support, advocacy, education and training for the homeless with the goal of empowering clients to obtain independence and self-sufficiency.
