Built in 1930, this football field has had many famous players compete on this gridiron. Future hall of fame quarterbacks such as Joe Montana and Paul Hornung, along with Tim Brown, Joe Thiesmann, Alan Page, and many others. The Fighting Irish have won 11 national college football championships and produced more All-Americans than any other Football Bowl Subdivision school. In addition, seven Fighting Irish football players have won the Heisman Trophy.
The stadium is known for its view of "Touchdown Jesus," a nickname given to the large mural entitled "The Word of Life" of the resurrected Jesus, which is located on the side of the nearby Hesburgh Library. The mosaic wall looms over the stadium, which mirror the raised arms of a referee signifying a touchdown.
