| Things To Do: Big Pig JigNov 2010 (annual)Go the whole hog at the Big Pig Jig cook-off in BBQ City, the oldest and only official barbecue cooking championship in Georgia. Entrants compete for US$10,000 in prize money in the noble art of barbecuing pork. Events really get going on the Friday night with a concert featuring nationally known artists. On Saturday, as the contestants cook their pork, local talents, a hog-calling contest and regional bands provide additional entertainment.
Later on Saturday is the People's Choice Contest, where US$1 buys a ballot for a sample of the 25-40 teams' barbecue meat and a chance to have your say as to the best. If you're still hungry, additional barbecue vendors (including a former Big Pig Jig champion) are delighted to feed you.
The cook-off began in 1982 when a group of friends added a barbecue contest to an established crafts festival and the county hog show. The continuous growth of the Big Pig Jig led to the building of a new site near the interstate highway and the establishment of new events, from a golf tournament to the Miss Barbecue City USA beauty pageant. |
