| Things To Do: Alaska Bald Eagle FestivalNov 2010 (annual)Every winter the bald eagle is celebrated throughout Haines with the five-day Alaska Bald Eagle Festival where as many as 3000 eagles gather along a four-mile stretch of the Chilkat River. Events include wildlife presentations, tours, photography workshops and exhibitions. Warm water upwellings in the river keep this stretch ice-free, providing access to the fish when food supplies are exhausted elsewhere.
Eagles flock from as far away as Washington State for the abundant feast. Starting in late October, hundreds can be seen, but the peak of the gathering usually occurs in mid-November, when the festival takes place. |
