Walking & Boat Tours -- From Easter to early November, daily guided tours of Canterbury are organized by the Guild of Guides (tel. 01227/459779), costing £4.25 ($8.10) for adults, £3.75 ($7.15) students and seniors, £3 ($5.70) for children younger than 12, and £13 ($24) for a family ticket. The cold stones of Canterbury take on new life as you take this tour, often conducted by guides filled with wit and insight. Meet at the Tourist Information Centre at 34 St. Margaret's St., in a pedestrian area opposite the cathedral, from Easter through to the end of the October daily at 2pm and also Monday to Saturday at 11:30am in July and August. From just below the Weavers House, boats leave for half-hour trips on the river with commentary on the history of the buildings you pass. We recommend these boat tours, even if you've taken the walking tour. They can be a lot of fun, and you get to see Canterbury from a different perspective -- that is, from the water. Horseback Riding -- The Bursted Manor Riding Centre in Pett Bottom (tel. 01227/830568) is open Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday 9am to 6pm. The last lesson is at 6pm on weekdays and 5pm on Saturday and Sunday. A 1-hour group lesson or hack ride is available for £27 ($51). The location is 4.5km (2.8 miles) southeast of Canterbury. |
