|  | Sweetgrass Basket Cultural Arts FestivalSweetgrass basket-making has a special place in the heart of South Carolina, as displayed at this annual Mount Pleasant gathering. The two-day festival at Laing Middle School features various unique handmade arts and crafts, paintings, live performances and documentaries.Sweetgrass basket-making is an ancient African tradition brought to America by enslaved Africans more than 300 years ago. The baskets were first used by slaves to store their personal belongings on local plantations. Since then they have been made and sold for fun and to supplement family incomes.
