| | Rose of Tralee International FestivalThe Rose of Tralee International Festival is a major carnival event revolving around finding the year's 'rose', or beauty queen. Entrants travel from all over the world to take part.Preliminary rounds are held in Irish communities in places as far-flung as Denver and Cape Town. Each selects their own "Rose" to go forward to the contest at the festival itself. Tens of thousands descend on Tralee to see the crowning of the queen.
Top name international bands give concerts and there are numerous children's activities, ceilidhs, parades and firework displays, even a live webcast to make sure the rest of the world is in on the act too. Nonetheless, it is the selection of the Rose of Tralee that is the reason for the festival, and remains its greatest moment, prompting the entire crowd to break into the famous song which tells the story of two ill-fated lovers.
