| | Uttarayan Kite FestivalGujarat's major cities (and just about every town and village in between) celebrate the end of winter and the coming of summer with the fabulous Uttarayan Kite Festival that attracts expert kite-makers and flyers from around India.Kite flyers thread glass shards to the strings of their kites so they can do battle in the air at the Uttarayan Kite Festival with their neighbours and cut their kite strings. This sends the kites spinning to the ground where enthusiastic children collect the spoils. The sheer number of kites, the ability of the flyers to control them with only one string, and the height and distance to which the kites ascend, makes for a fantastic spectacle.
During the Uttarayan Kite Festival kites are flown from rooftops, windows and balconies with particular zeal by the people of Ahmedabad (Gujarat's principal city). Kites are made with lightweight paper, silks, thread and scraps of cloth in the shapes of animals, or Hindu gods. When dusk falls, people take their kites to show off at neighbourhood parties and over-indulge in salted popcorn and sesame snap biscuits. |
