Return to previous Page ›Richmond International Raceway hosts races each season during the NEXTEL series of NASCAR races. With a seated capacity of 105,000, the oval track opened in 1946, two years before the birth of NASCAR.
The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) is the largest sanctioning body of motorsports in the United States. Of the three race series they sanction, the NEXTEL Cup Series is by far the most popular. Unlike Formula One, races take place on predominantly triangular or oval tracks with banked corners to enable them to be taken at greater speed.
