Monterey Chinese New Year Festival

Return to previous Page ›

The Chinese festival of Yuan Xiao Jie marks the end of the Chinese New Year celebrations in Monterey Park City. Symbolising family reunions and the hope of a full and happy life, it draws over 70,000 visitors to Barnes Park.

The festival features glowing lanterns shaped like birds, fish, animals and flowers, fruit and more modern alternatives like rockets and satellites. A food court provides the traditional food eaten at Yuan Xiao Jie, a type of small dumpling ball made of glutinous rice flour called Yuanxiao or Tangyuan, along with many other Chinese delicacies. There are exhibitions and displays of embroidery, calligraphy and music and dance, while martial arts displays and lion dancers provide entertainment for all the family.
