Gettysburg is most famous for being the site of the bloodiest battle in the American Civil War, a battle widely seen as the turning point in the campaign. The battlefield site is now a National Military Park, and the town itself is also worth a visit. Founded in 1786, it has a number of historic buildings, including the Dobbin House Tavern, which, having been built in 1776, predates even the town itself.
