| | Turks and Caicos Conch FestivalWho would have thought the conch was so revered? The Turks and Caicos Conch Festival in the Blue Hills area of Providenciales celebrates the pink-lipped shell on one noisy day of eating, dancing, sailing and blowing.Conch, pronounced konk in the Turks and Caicos, has been an important Caribbean food source since the time of the Arawak indians, who also carved them into tools and ceremonial objects.
A conch-tasting competition involving local restaurants and chefs lasts for most of the day. A native sloop sailing race, live music and the popular conch-blowing contest make up the rest of the fun. |
