| | Lake Taupo Cycle ChallengeNew Zealand's magnificent Lake Taupo is the setting for one of the world's largest fun bike events - the Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge, first held in 1977. More than 10,000 people are expected to pedal their way round the 160km course. The emphasis is on enjoyment and, although the course is tough, men and women of varying abilities are encouraged to take part. There are some difficult hills on the course, but if kids as young as 12 and 13 can get up them, so can you.
Even the weariest cyclist will be inspired to push through that last bit of pedalling by the sublime scenery and the tranquil expanse of water at their side. If that doesn't help, then the prospect of a rip-roaring carnival with lots of tempting prizes should suffice - in previous years cyclists have won holidays, cars, laptops and digital cameras.
For those who want to push their pedalling power to the limits, there's always the Enduro races - the Maxi Enduro at 640km and Enduro, which is twice round the Lake at 320km. Application forms are available on the event website. |
