São João festivities
Return to previous Page ›
On this summer night, Porto residents take to the streets of their UNESCO Heritage city to party, in honour of their favourite Saint, John the Baptist (São João). Paper balloons are released into the sky, followed later on by fireworks.
The São João festivities, of pagan origin and associated with the celebration of the summer solstice, are marked by dancing, eating and lots of fireworks. Colourful paper balloons are released into the sky on this evening, as they have been for centuries.
Delicious food is sold on the streets, including grilled sardines. Little plant pots are also sold, which are said to bring you luck in marriage, business or protect you from evil. The party goes on all night and is not to be missed if you're in the area.
