Beijing's top choir, The International Festival Chorus, perform their annual rendition of Handel's Messiah at the Forbidden City Concert Hall. The choral group, boasting members from across the globe, invites a different conductor each year to lead the festive concert.

In 2009, the guest conductor is Professor Wu Lingfen, who is Head of Choral Conducting at the China Conservatory of Music.

Written in just 24 days for Dublin in 1742, Handel's Messiah initially ran into public opposition as audiences were unsettled at the use of Christ's prophesy, his birth, death and afterlife as the subject for a work of art. Handel could only get away with performances which were for charitable purposes, but then King George II stood up at the Hallelujah Chorus, and the piece has remained a quintessential part of Christmas and (more appositely) Easter ever since.
