Enjoy spectacular views on Skyrail Rainforest Cableway of the tropical rainforest, Coral Sea and Cairns. Courtesy of Skyrail

Skyrail Rainforest Cableway

Cairns' Skyrail Rainforest Cableway provides a fully integrated rainforest experience from canopy to forest floor. Admire the unique flora and fauna of this ancient rainforest from boardwalks at two stations, then sit back in your gondola and enjoy the views.

Winner of the 2008 Australian Qantas Award for Excellence in Sustainable Tourism, Skyrail is probably the best way to experience the Wet Tropics World Heritage Rainforests just outside Cairns. Whatever the weather, it's never quite the same journey and is a unique way to view the rainforest in all its majesty.

From the sea-level terminal at Caravonica, you catch a six-person gondola that glides just a few metres above the canopy, affording stunning views of the forest, Barron Gorge, Barron Falls and River and out over the Coral Sea. The whole cableway stretches for 7.5km (allow about 1.5 hours one-way) but you can break your journey at Red Peak Station. Follow the interpretive boardwalk through the forest here or join one of the excellent ranger-guided tours to learn more about the wildlife.

The next stop is Barron Falls station where it's just a short walk to the interactive Rainforest Interpretive Centre and a viewing platform over the 260-metre Barron Falls. They are an awe-inspiring sight if you're lucky enough to catch them in full flight, shrouded in mist, during the wet season.

The final stop is Kuranda Station, a short walk from the village of the same name. There's plenty to do here with heritage markets seven days a week, shops, cafes, restaurants and a range of nature attractions and museums.

It was at first thought impossible to erect such a long cableway without clearing a swathe through the protected rainforest of the Barron Gorge National Park. Years of planning followed and special helicopters were used to fly in the pylons that were fixed to the floor, disturbing the bare minimum of vegetation. The stations are built on the sites of erstwhile logging camps from the first settlers and the boardwalks enable large numbers of people to pass through forest areas without disturbing any plant or animal life. The end result is not just a premier tourist attraction but also a world-leading piece of sustainable tourism. Most of all, however, it provides a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Packages are available for single fares, returns, or in conjunction with the Kuranda Scenic Railway. Transfers from local resorts can also be included.
