The Tsarina's Slippers at the Garden
Return to previous Page ›
Bringing together both the Royal Ballet and Royal Opera, all too rarely seen together, Francesco Zambello directs the Covent Garden première of Tchaikovsky's Cherevichki (The Tsarina's Slippers). Alastair Marriott choreographs and Alexander Polianichko conducts.
Joining two Tchaikovsky classic ballets this autumn (Sleeping Beauty and Nutcracker), Cherevichki (1887) is the revised version of Vakula the Smith (1876), based on the same Gogol folktale Christmas Eve that Rimsky-Korsakov later set to music.
Vakula (Vsevolod Grivnov) loves Oxana (Olga Guryakova; Viktoria Yastrebovaso on 5 & 8 December), but has to deal with her father Chub (Vladimir Matorin); his mother, the witch Solokha (Nina Romanova); and even the devil (Maxim Mikhailov), who gives Vakula a ride to St Petersburg. There he meets His Highness (Serkei Leiferkus) and hunts down the Tsarina's slippers demanded by Oxana.
