No Christmas would be complete without Tchaikovsky's wonderful ballet The Nutcracker. The Royal Ballet revives Peter Wright's acclaimed production (after Lev Ivanov), featuring a rolling roll call of principals as the Nutcracker Prince and Sugar Plum Fairy. Koen Kessels conducts.
At a Christmas party, enigmatic toy maker Drosselmyer hands out toys to the children. Clara becomes obsessed with her toy soldier nutcracker. Falling asleep under the Christmas tree she dreams that the nutcracker comes alive and battles with the Mouse King's army.
Turning into a handsome prince, he whisks Clara off to the kingdom of sweets to be entertained by some of the most popular dances ever staged, including his famous pas de deux with the sugar plum fairy.
