bite09: Roman Tragedies
Return to previous Page ›
Back in London after 11 years, Toneelgroep Amsterdam brings general director Ivo van Hove's acclaimed distillation of Shakespeare, Roman Tragedies to the Barbican Theatre as part of bite09. The six-hour show conflates Coriolanus, Julius Caesar and Antony and Cleopatra.
Like a living, breathing version of revision notes, albeit in Dutch with English surtitles, Roman Tragedies presents Shakespeare's three great Roman-based plays as a six-hour marathon (with several mini-breaks, rather than intervals).
Join haughty Coriolanus turning his back on Rome to join former enemy Aufidius, only to be turned away from revengeful desire by his mother and wife's entreaties. Watch as Julius Caesar (fairly haughty himself) enflames his fellow senators so they murder him on the Capitol. And find out how, in the bloody aftermath, Octavian outwits Antony and Cleopatra.
