| | Opera North: SwanhunterFollowing the astounding success of The Adventures of Pinocchio (now on DVD), Opera North again premières an opera by composer Jonathan Dove and librettist Alasdair Middleton. Swanhunter, based on Finnish legend, is performed in the Grand Theatre's Howard Assembly Room. There's no more lyrical composer currently composing than Jonathan Dove, with his own glistening, ringing soundworld. Together Middleton and Dove create a family opera that introduces its audience into the sheer necessity of singing, as Finnish hero Lemminkäinen is saved from death by his mother nursing him back to life with song.
Scored for just six instruments, including the accordion, Swanhunter, conducted by Stuart Stratford and directed by Clare Whistler, features Andrew Rees (Lemminkäinen), Yvonne Howard (Mother), Cragg (Chorus), Frances Bourne (Louhi), Nicholas Sharratt (Soppy-Hat) and Graeme Broadbent (Death). |
