Royal Academy Opera: Handel's Semele

Return to previous Page ›

Indefatigable octogenarian Sir Charles Mackerras follows his English National Opera stint conducting Britten with this Royal Academy Opera production of Handel's "near opera" Semele. It is directed at the Royal Academy of Music's Sir Jack Lyon's Theatre by Anna Sweeny.

Based on Ovid with William Congreve libretto's, Handel's Semele (1744) is really an oratorio, although with enough drama to make it easily work on stage. Jupiter, in love with Semele, steals her away from the jaws of marriage to Athamas. When Juno, goddess of marriage, hunts the elopers down, she comes disguised as Semele's sister Ino, thus sealing Semele's fate.

Sir Charles Mackerras' interests range from the baroque to Janacék, from Czech music to Gilbert & Sullivan, all delivered with effortless style and aplomb. Laurence Cummings conducts on 20 November.
