Acoustic upright bass player and vocalist Esperanza Spalding performs at New Morning in Paris. Expect upbeat sets from a charismatic young performer.
Hailing from Portland, Oregon, Esperanza Spalding announced her arrival at the forefront of the contemporary jazz scene with the 2006 release of her optimistic debut album, Junjo. Showcasing her bass playing and natural vocal style, the album won much acclaim.
Spalding went on to work with Stanley Clarke, Pat Metheny and Joe Lovano before releasing an enponymous follow-up last year. Demonstrating influences from hip-hop to tropicalismo, the album also finds her developing as both a singer and composer.
