|  |  American Dance FestivalFirst held in 1934, and held in North Carolina since 1978, the American Dance Festival brings international dance companies together for an unrivalled summer season, at Durham's Duke University.The American Dance Festival has been praised by the Wall Street Journal as "artistically the most important gathering of modern dance professionals and students in America", and Time Magazine as a "proving ground for modern choreography".
With more than 60 works, including 11 world premières of ADF commissions, given by 37 companies (ten of which made their ADF debuts), in 2008 the American Dance Festival celebrated its 75th anniversary. It was a double celebration as it also marked the 40th season of the Festival's director, Charles L Reinhart.
The festival also has an enviable reputation for premièring new choreography and during the event, approximately 450 professional and pre-professional dancers from around the globe unite at the ADF School for a spell of intensive training. Alongside workshops and talks based around the performances there are concerts, the International Choreographers Commissioning Program and the ceremony to present the Samuel H Scripps/ADF Award - established in 1981 and now worth US$50,000.
