| | Semi-Annual Silver Spurs RodeoGrab a ten-gallon hat and don't forget your lasso as the Semi-Annual Silver Spurs Rodeo comes to Kissimmee's Silver Spurs Arena. One of the largest rodeos east of the Mississippi River, it attracts contenders from all over the country. The event features both women and men competing in bull and bronco riding, steer wrestling and barrel racing competitions. There is even quadrille dancing on horseback by the Silver Spurs Quadrille.
Rodeo began as a competition between ranch hands whose job was to break in the new horses and cattle. The history of Florida cowboys is quite different from that of the cowboys of the West. Because the climate results in a great deal of underbrush growth, the cowboys here had to act according to their environment, flushing out the cows from the thick vegetation as opposed to chasing them around wide-open spaces.
