| | Rochester International Film FestivalRochester International Film Festival at George Eastman House's Dryden Theatre includes an annual competition open to filmmakers of any level. It accepts film and videos under 40 minutes and screens around 50 films, competing for the Shoestring Trophy. The Rochester International Film Festival was founded in 1959 under the title Movies on a Shoestring (a reference to narrow Super-8 stock as well as the films' budgets). Its name now reflects the increasingly international scope of its entrants. It is a non-profit festival in Rochester, New York supported by various grants and, although it takes place in the Eastman museum, it is not run by the venue's management. There are no cash prizes, but winners receive a trophy and a place for their film in the Best of the Fest lending archive.
For many years, the Rochester International Film Festival was an amateur film festival and, although the professionalism of the entries has gone up every year, it is still open to all-comers. Many previous entrants have been heard of since, such as Joe Nussbaum's very successful short, George Lucas In Love. |
