|  |  White Sands National MonumentThe ever-changing White Sands National Monument of the Tularosa Basin near Alamogordo takes you to another world. Marvel at wave-like dunes of gypsum sand that have engulfed 275 square miles of desert and created the world's largest gypsum dune field.The dunes are always changing in shape as they slowly advance with the strong south-westerly winds - every time you visit the landscape offers something very new. The extraordinarily harsh environment means that even plants and animals adapted to desert conditions struggle to survive. Only a few species of plants can grow quickly enough to survive burial by the advance of the sands, although several types of small animals have evolved a white colouration that camouflages them in the gypsum sand.
Although the National Park is open throughout the year, the winter months see less visitors and have kinder light to appreciate the landscape.
Keep your eye on the skies too - hundreds have spotted UFOs; perhaps they mistook the area for home. |
