|  | Olympia Farmers MarketOver the past 30 years Olympia Farmers Market has grown to become one of the best-known on the US west coast. Active from April to December, it is the centrepiece of Washington's waterfront at the southern end of Puget Sound.Established by a hearty band of volunteers in the mid-1970s, the Olympia Farmers Market moved into its own purpose-built hall in 1998 and now houses 80 stalls and eight food-service huts. Aside from seasonal fruit from Eastern Washington, all food is grown in the counties surrounding Olympia. Locally-made handicrafts feature in several stalls, and the prepared-food vendors are a cut above the average fast-food operation.
A covered stage at the Olympia Farmers Market also allows for live entertainment on selected occasions, such as a Bluegrass Festival in September. Other annual events include a Strawberry and Raspberry Festival in June, a barbecue and chilli contest in August, Tomato Festival in September and, in November and December, a holiday market and harvest food drive.
In short, the Olympia Farmers Market is a reminder that in a world of increasingly uniform food and entertainment, even a small city can develop interesting and unique attractions on the basis of local resources and efforts. |
