| | Weimar Onion MarketWeimar's historic Onion Market draws around 300,000 visitors every year with carnival attractions, a Ferris wheel, music, genial crowds, row upon row of food stands and, naturally, lots and lots of onions.Established in 1653, the Zwiebelmarkt is but one of the many markets which once took place in the Thuringian royal seat. Its distinction lies in having survived through the centuries to the present day, through war and decades of Communist rule. Like many long-established markets in Germany, it has evolved into a popular festival.
A 10km run and half-marathon also take place on Saturday. Then there's Bockbier, the delightfully dark German beer, and what some consider to be the highlight of the event - the crowning of the Onion Queen! |
