| | Gullah FestivalThe Gullah Festival, at the High School in Beaufort, celebrates the heritage of the Gullah people of the US southern coast, Festivities include storytelling, African dance, drumming and music, cultural workshops, fashion shows and boat-building.The event takes place in the low country of South Carolina - the region where African slaves were brought in the late 1600s to work on the rice, indigo, and cotton plantations. Like any island culture with minimal mainland contact and because they were not sold and resold as often as slaves on the mainland were, the Gullah have been able to hold onto some unique traditions and retain ancestral family patterns for hundreds of years.
The festival was started in 1986 by Rosalie Pazant, who persevered for the first few years in order to finally make it a success. Today, backed by city and county governments, it draws in over 70,000 people from 32 states and several countries. |
