This long-established New Year's Day American football game is held at the Cowboy Stadium in Arlington. It showcases teams from two top college leagues: the SEC champion plays a top team chosen from the Big 12.
Like the other New Year's Day bowl games, the Cotton Bowl originated from the efforts of local businessmen to take advantage of the mild Southern weather and the break between college semesters to boost their city's image by sponsoring pair-offs of top regular-team finishers.
In the run-up to the big day, local organisations organise a New Year's Eve parade and a marching band contest.
