| | Ice Caves/Bandera CraterThe Ice Caves and Bandera Crater in New Mexico offer an experience of both fire and ice to the visitor interested in natural ecosystems and the peaceful beauty of the southwest. The Ice Caves and Bandera Crater together form an ecological wonder. The Crater, an 800-foot deep inactive volcano, is 1200 feet wide at the top with an elevation of 8372 feet at the rim. This magnificent volcanic "cinder cone" was much more turbulent some 10,000 years ago, when the site was active. Today, however, it blends in with the surroundings and is much more easily accessible than many volcano remains found around the world. However, erosion and gravity have taken their toll on the crater and it is now filling up with cinders and rocks, making for a very fragile environment.
Known to the local Pueblo Indians as Winter Lake, the Ice Caves are located in a partially collapsed lava tube in which the temperature never rises above freezing. The caves have been around since 1100BC and were formed when precipitation was trapped underground, causing the floor to thicken with a layer of ice each passing year. Today the ice floor is 20 feet thick and the natural layers of blue-green reflection - the colour caused by artic algae - make for a beautiful and unique sight.
It's not possible to explore the area alone, so contact the Ice Caves Trading Co for rates, hours and organised trips. |
