| | Jewel Cave National MonumentWith more than 122 miles of underground tunnels surveyed, Jewel Cave is the third-longest cave in the world, while airflow within its passages indicates a vast area yet to be explored.Cave tours provide opportunities for viewing this pristine cave system and its wide variety of stalactites, stalagmites, draperies, frostwork, flowstone, boxwork (a giant honeycomb effect) and hydromagnesite balloons. The cave is also an important home for several species of bat.
If you're really brave and over four years old, in the summer you can take a candlelit tour for a small extra charge. It never gets too cold as the caves are quite humid all year round, but you are advised to wear a light jacket or jumper and low heeled, rubber-soled walking shoes.
Jewel Cave Park covers an enormous 1274 acres and attracts around 135,000 visitors annually. Park use is highest in June, July and August, with the least busy times coming during the months of December, January and February. Take time to check out the landscape above ground and have a picnic on the prairie or in the penderosa pine forests. You could spot mule deer, white-tailed deer, porcupines, squirrels and chipmunks, as well as several species of birds. |
