|  |  Martin Luther King Day of ServicePhiladelphia leads the way in transforming the national holiday into a day of action with the annual Martin Luther King Day of Service, organised in the city since 1996.Diverse groups of Americans get together on the King holiday to actively celebrate Dr King's life of promoting social justice and helping others which was signed into law by President Clinton on 23 August 1994. The King Holiday and Service Act was co-authored by former Pennsylvania US Senator Harris Wofford and Atlanta Congressman John Lewis. Philadelphia's first Day of Service attracted 1000 volunteers in January 1996.
Since 1996, this annual event has been the largest in the nation that honours Dr King. During the past ten years, more than 215,000 people throughout the Philadelphia area have celebrated his legacy by turning community concerns into citizen action, with many projects continuing throughout the year.
