| | Race of the ClassicsThe Race of the Classics sailing challenge starts in Rotterdam, sails via Ostend to Ramsgate or Lowestoft (depending on the weather) before re-crossing the North Sea to finish near where it started, in Amsterdam.First held in 1988, the Race of the Classics attracts over 20 teams to sail across the North Sea to England and back, competing for the highly-prized Challenge Cup.
The race was instigated by two students at the Amsterdam Academy, with a view to fostering relations between international financial students and raising the profile of their own institution. It is still organised by enthusiastic students (a committee of just 15 of them), but is now one of the biggest amateur sailing races in Europe.
Each year the boats are due in England (Ramsgate or Lowestoft, up the coast in Suffolk) on the Thursday - mid-way through the voyage - before returning to Amsterdam, via IJmuiden, for a finishing party on the Sunday. |
