The Coachella Festival returns to the Empire Polo Ground in Indio, California, attracting thousands to see shows spread across two main stages and various tents. A diverse range of stellar music headliners perform beneath the swaying palms and desert skies.
Away from the centre, weirdness reigns. Bikini-clad Californians catch the burlesque acts and escapologists at the Do Lab stage, before being hosed down by vaudevillian performers with huge water-guns. Punters take a break from the main-stage throng to relax in the shade of colourful mechanised sunflowers. And as night falls, fire-eaters are silhouetted against the star-strewn desert skies.
The festival has grown steadily since it first took place in 2000 to become the most eagerly awaited date on the US music festival calendar. The event offers on-site camping in a lush green field or, if you prefer a little more comfort, then book a hotel in Indio, nearby Indian Wells or Palm Springs.

By Train: take the free Coachella Express from Los Angeles direct to the campground and back.
