| | Rose ParadeAn estimated 425 million television viewers join a million curbside spectators for a century-old New Year celebration, the Rose Parade. Floral floats, marching bands and horseback entertainers stage a two-hour spectacle along Pasadena's Colorado Boulevard. Each New Year public attention focuses on the Los Angeles suburb for its annual Tournament of Roses, consisting of the Rose Parade and Rose Bowl football game, a festival of flowers, music and sports.
The first Tournament of Roses took place in 1890 when early inhabitants of the area wanted to showcase its mild winter weather. In its early years, the tournament boasted games including ostrich races, bronco-busting demonstrations and a race between a camel and an elephant (the elephant won).
The elaborate floats have come a long way since the early days. Although a few are still built by volunteers, most are built by professional float-building companies and take nearly a year to construct. Twenty-four invited marching bands ensure that the parade goes with a swing. |
