| | Harder PotscheteInterlaken's youth mark the new year with Harder Potschete. They parade through the streets wearing elaborately carved masks, accompanied by noisy drum corps and bands. The party continues at night to Swiss folk music in the town's squares and restaurants. The Potscheten depicted by the masks are mountain spirits, so the festive procession owes many of its features to pre-Christian pagan customs. Costumes at Interlaken's Harder Potschete tend to be colourful and spirits bear evergreen branches.
The parade begins in Interlaken's Market Square. Afterwards, the best Harder Potschete costumes are recognised in an awards ceremony. The party continues at night to the tune of Swiss folk music, with various activities in the town's squares and restaurants. |
