May Day Parade & Festival
Return to previous Page ›
The annual May Day Parade & Festival has filled the streets of Minneapolis on the first Sunday of every May since 1975, as thousands of people celebrate the arrival of spring.
Created by In The Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre with the involvement of the community, The May Day Parade & Festival features costumed participants grouped according to themes and accompanied by puppets which represent important features of the Earth and its inhabitants. Themes often refer to renewal, awareness, change for the better and respect for traditions, chosen via public meetings in February and March.
After the theme section of the parade draws to an end, the "Free Speech" section begins, inviting everyone join in expressing some of the many and diverse views represented in the larger community.
It all culminates at Powderhorn Park, where special puppets, puppeteers, performers and musicians congregate on the big, green hill that faces the lakeside for a performance that introduces all of the major puppet figures and tells their stories.
