Great Sunrise Balloon Race
Return to previous Page ›A colourful array of hot air balloons fills the sky above Tuscaloosa during this fundraising race for the Sunrise Community. An all-day carnival adds to the festive atmosphere for the thousands of spectators.
This is no ordinary race. A lead or "hare" balloon takes off and drifts westwards towards the Everglades. The hare's job is to find a spot on the ground and mark it with a 25-foot X made of brightly-coloured tape. Teams in "hound" balloons then set off in search of the X. Once they locate it, the aim is to hit it with a beanbag attached to a long flag - the team whose beanbag lands closest to the centre wins a cash prize.
The Sunrise Community is an organisation that has served people with developmental disabilities since 1969 and the race has been an annual fixture for many years. Keith Muniz, director of development, explains why they chose ballooning: "The balloons represent a life filled with hope and promise or an individual rising to accomplish lofty goals."
