| | Sunderland Museum & Winter GardensThe Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens, in the heart of the city centre, offers visitors a chance to find out more about Sunderland's history and to wander the 1500 botanical wonders growing in the Winter Gardens.Particular strengths of the museum's collection are artefacts relating to the shipbuilding and coal mining industries which thrived in the area; the proud artistic heritage of the region which produced excellent pottery and glass; a fine collection of art works by LS Lowry as well as 19th- and 20th-century art, archaeology, ethnography and natural history of the area.
Highlights include a stunning collection of Sunderland lustreware pottery, a Londonderry glass table service (made on Wearside in the 1820s) and rare fossil Gliding Reptile (Coelurosauravus) which is 250 million years old.
Meanwhile the amazing new Winter Gardens offers a stroll along the treetop walkway above the plant canopy, some unusual water features and an excellent botanical collection of over 1500 plants of 146 species, displayed to their full splendour in naturalistic settings under a single-span 30 metre dome.
Visitors can see growing examples of many important plants from around the world, such as tea, coffee, sugar, citrus fruits, date palms, bananas, pineapple, mango, the vanilla orchid and gingers, as well as a number of plants that provide important medicinal elements. |
