| | Key West AquariumKey West Aquarium offers the chance to learn about the wonders of the underwater world, with a wide variety of fish ranging from grouper, moray eels and barracuda to tropical fish, tarpon and parrotfish. As well as being able to touch many of the fish during tours of the aquarium, there are also shark feedings, which have them thrashing around in the water for their dinner. More than underwater voyeurism, the aquarium is also committed to protecting endangered sea turtles, working in conjunction with the Turtle Hospital and Florida Sea Turtle Stranding Network. Some turtles are permanently housed at the aquarium due to injuries that may prevent them from surviving in the wild.
Key West Aquarium is one of the original attractions on the island, opened in 1934 as part of the federal drive to turn the island into a tourist destination. It was originally an open-air aquarium and one of the first and largest at that time. Since then it has doubled in size. |
