|  |  Doubtful SoundAn overnight cruise on Doubtful Sound is one of the most incredible escapes into unspoilt nature you can experience. This bewitching place was carved by the ice-age millennia ago and has barely been inhabited since then. The soaring mountains on either side of the channel create magical light effects and mists as you watch seals sunbathing and dolphins cavorting. An unforgettable experience.The cruise also offers sea kayaking up a stretch of the fiord, birdwatching and a short walk into the untouched bush (although the horse flies are unremitting once on land).
The more famous fiord is Milford Sound, into which you can take a spectacular plane flight, but Milford has become so touristy that we recommend Doubtful as the better experience - it's bigger and it's the only one you can visit overnight.
