| | Kangaroo IslandKangaroo Island, off the south coast of Australia, is one of nature's goldmines. The island has benefitted from its remoteness and limited development, ensuring an abundance of spectacular wildlife, seldom found elsewhere, all living in a protected natural environment. Some of the wildlife to be encountered on Kangaroo Island includes dolphins, sea lions, penguins, wallabies, goannas, koalas, and of course kangaroos. This is a fantastic place for scuba diving and surfing, and some choose to take a boat out for some serious deep-sea fishing. Others take advantage of one of the many guided tours on offer or simply enjoy the fantastic seafood.
Kangaroo Island is home to one of Australia's largest sea lion colonies. Seal Bay in Seal Bay Conservation Park is situated on the south coast and is home to a colony of wild Australian sea lions. This is one of the few places in the world where these animals are relatively tolerant of people and visitors are able to walk quite close to them providing they are undisturbed.
There's not much on Kangaroo Island that isn't part of a national park, but Flinders Chase National Park at the western end should not be missed. Its wealth of attractions, including the Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch (home of New Zealand fur seals), take a good day to explore in full. Campsites cater for those who want to really explore and there are plenty of walking tours on offer. |
