Cross-country skiing through the breathtaking scenery of the Snowy Mountains. Courtesy of Tourism New South Wales

Kosciusko National Park

Kosciusko National Park is not only New South Wales' largest national park and one of the best-loved in the country, but also boasts Australia's highest peak, Mount Kosciusko, and is recognised as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

Set in the heart of the Snowy Mountains, unsurprisingly skiing is high on the agenda at the Kosciusko National Park, but the summer months are also popular with bushwalkers, cyclists and nature lovers.

Ski resorts include Perisher Blue, Thredbo, Charlotte Pass and Selwyn Snowfields, with downhill as well as cross-country skiing, various walks, cycling trails, fishing and caving. Some of the cross-country skiing is around Mount Selwyn, Three Mile Dam and Dry Dam near Cabramurra in the north, and the Perisher Range in the south. There are numerous formal walking tracks in the park, which are detailed in the local paper, Kosciusko Today, available at centres across the park. Cyclists have separate tracks and should check what these are at the information centres. There are also lookouts with great views of Kosciusko National Park and picnic areas for the summer months.

Kosciusko National Park is of particular interest to nature lovers, including the glacial lakes of the alpine area with snow grass and snow daisies, heaths and alpine bogs, six wilderness areas with sub-alpine rare plant species and the Yarrangobilly Caves in a limestone belt 14km long and 1.5km wide.
