Getting There
Interstates 84 and 91 intersect in central Hartford, halfway between New York and Boston. Downtown Hartford has plenty of convenient parking.
Bradley International Airport, in Windsor Locks, about 12 miles north of the city, is served by several major airlines, including American (tel. 800/433-7300), Continental (tel. 800/525-0280), Delta (tel. 800/221-1212), Northwest (tel. 800/225-2525), Southwest (tel. 800/435-9792), United (tel. 800/241-6522), and US Airways (tel. 800/428-4322). Buses, cabs, and limousines shuttle passengers into the city and to other points in the state.
Amtrak (tel. 800/USA-RAIL) has several trains daily following the inland route between New York City and Boston, stopping at Hartford and Windsor Locks. The trip to either New York or Boston takes about 2 1/2 hours.

Special Events
Hartford makes the most of its association with one of America's most beloved authors, Mark Twain. His image is seen everywhere, and the city puts on Mark Twain Days in mid-August, with such events as frog jumping, riverboat rides, and performances of plays based on Twain's life or works. In late July, there's a Festival of Jazz with free performances at the pavilion in Bushnell Park.
