Getting There

By Car -- You'll likely drive here; I-87 becomes the Northway north of Albany and speeds you south to north along the eastern edge of the park. Enterprise (tel. 800/325-8007) and Hertz (tel. 800/654-3131) operate out of Glens Falls and Utica. Enterprise's Glens Falls location will pick you up and deliver you to the office in Lake George or Warrensburg without charge. Hertz has a rental desk at the Adirondack Regional Airport with limited hours.

By Air -- Continental Airlines (tel. 800/523-3273) flies into the Adirondack Regional Airport in Saranac Lake (tel. 518/891-4600), in the northern part of the park, and into Oneida County Airport (tel. 315/736-9404), a 45-minute drive from Old Forge. Other nearby airports include Burlington, Vermont (1 hr. from the eastern section of the region), Albany (1 hr. from the southern border), and Montreal (1 hr. from Plattsburg).

By Bus -- Adirondack Trailways (tel. 800/776-7548) serves Lake George, Saranac Lake, Lake Placid, Keene, Keene Valley, Schroon Lake, Pottersville, Chestertown, Warrensburg, Malone, Hogansburg, Massena, Potsdam, and Canton. The daily service from Albany to Lake Placid takes 4 hours.

By Train -- Amtrak (tel. 800/872-7245) stops in Glens Falls, Whitehall, Ticonderoga, Port Henry, Westport, Port Kent, Plattsburgh, and Rouses Point.

By Ferry -- Lake Champlain ferries (tel. 802/864-9804) go from Grand Isle, Vermont, to Plattsburgh, New York; Burlington, Vermont, to Port Kent, New York; and Charlotte, Vermont, to Essex, New York. Schedule depends on season.

Visitor Information

The Adirondack Regional Tourism Council (tel. 518/846-8016) has an information center on I-87 southbound between exits 41 and 40, which is open daily year-round, from 8am to 5pm; from Memorial Day to Labor Day, it's open until 8pm. For information on Lake George, you can also contact Warren County Tourism, Municipal Center, 1340 State Rte. 9, Lake George (tel. 800/95-VISIT). Farther west, contact Inlet Information (tel. 866/GO-INLET) or Old Forge Tourism (tel. 315/369-6983).
