Getting There

By Plane -- Malmö's airport (tel. 040/613-11-00) is at Sturup, 30km (19 miles) southeast of the city. It receives international flights from London, plus flights from cities within Sweden and Stockholm (trip time: 1 hr.). Three airlines that serve the airport are Malmö Aviation (tel. 040/660-29-00), SAS (tel. 770/72-77-27), Flyme (tel. 02476/27-06-75), and Ryanair (tel. 0900/202-02-40), which offers flights to London and points within continental Europe. The city's major international link to the world is Copenhagen Airport at Copenhagen, to which Malmö is connected via the Öresund Bridge.

By Car -- From Helsingborg, motorists can head southeast along Route E6 directly into the center of Malmö. Another option is the car ferry from Denmark.

By Train -- Railway service is frequent between Gothenburg and Malmö (trip time: 3 1/2 hr.), and since the construction of the bridge, rail service is now direct, quick, and easy to both central Copenhagen and its airport. From Helsingborg to Malmö (trip time: 45 min.), trains leave hourly. From Stockholm, travel is 4 1/2 hours aboard the high-speed X-2000 train, 6 to 7 hours aboard slower trains. There also is train service between Copenhagen and Malmö. Trains depart from the central railway stations of both cities at 20-minute intervals, stopping en route at the Copenhagen airport. The cost each way between the centers of each city is 90SEK ($12/£6.30).

By Bus -- Two buses daily make the 4 1/2-hour run from Gothenburg to Malmö. For bus information, call Travelshop, Skeppsbron 10, P.O. Box 211, S-21120 Malmö (tel. 040/33-05-70). They specialize in the sale of bus tickets within Sweden and to other points within Europe as well.

Visitor Information

The Malmö Tourist Office, Central Station Skeppsbron 2 (tel. 040/34-12-00), is open as follows: May to September Monday to Friday 9am to 7pm, and Saturday and Sunday 10am to 5pm; October to April Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm, Saturday and Sunday 10am to 3pm.

Getting Around

It's easy to walk around the city center, although you may need to rely on public transport if you're branching out to sights on the periphery. An individual bus ticket costs 15SEK ($2.05/£1.05) and is valid for 1 hour. You also can purchase a 200SEK ($28/£14) magnetic card, which offers a slight reduction on the fare and can be used by several passengers at the same time. Individual tickets are sold aboard the bus by the driver. Discount cards can be bought or refilled at the automated vending machines in the Central Station and at other strategic transport junctions throughout the city.
