The Abilene area is a fishing and hunting destination, the hub of what Texans call "Big Country." There are numerous reservoirs in the region and vast tracts of still-untamed land. Located 15 miles southwest of the city, Abilene State Park, 150 Park Rd. 32 (tel. 915/572-3204), offers hiking, fishing, swimming, and camping opportunities, and abuts Lake Abilene, a fishing and boating hot spot. Once the stomping grounds of Comanches and buffalo herds, the park's woodland areas, chock full of pecan and oak trees, remain relatively pristine. Armadillos, deer, raccoons, and foxes still call the park home, as do some members of Texas's official state longhorn herd. Admission is $3 adults, $2 seniors, and free for children under 13. There are 110 campsites (95 with electric and water hook-ups and 15 tent sites) for $6 to $16 a night. Aside from overnight guests, the park is open from 8am to 10pm.
